Basic Properties
Byetta (generic name exenatide) is a treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to help control high blood sugar levels. It can be used as a single or supplementary treatment—pharmacotherapeutic group: analogs of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), ATC code: A10BJ01. Exenatide suppresses the secretion of glucagon, the concentration of which is known to be inadequately increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Exenatide slows down the process of gastric emptying, thereby reducing the rate at which glucose from food enters the bloodstream. It helps reduce food intake due to decreased appetite and increased satiety.
